Dr. Rithesh Ram BSc. (Electrical Engineering), MD, PhD (Epidemiology), CCFP (Rural Generalist Medicine specialist)

Dr. Rithesh Ram is a devoted family physician based in Drumheller, Alberta, where he serves as an Alberta Health Services (AHS) staff physician in the Central Zone. Originally from Camrose, Alberta, where he was born and raised, Dr. Ram has deep roots in the province he now calls home.

With a strong passion for education, Dr. Ram holds the position of Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Calgary. There, he leads residency training in Drumheller, shaping the next generation of physicians. Recently, he took on the role of Director of the University of Calgary Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (UCLIC) Program, an innovative, research-driven initiative that immerses medical students in the full spectrum of patient care across southern Alberta.

Dr. Ram’s commitment to rural medicine shines through his diverse practice. He works across multiple settings, including his primary care network—where he also contributes to a chronic pain clinic—acute care at the hospital, the emergency department, the operating room, and long-term care facilities. At the Drumheller Health Centre, he currently serves as the Clinical Lead for Acute Care and Emergency, ensuring high-quality care for his community.

Living in Drumheller with his family, Dr. Ram balances his busy career with a rich personal life. He cherishes reading countless stories to his children, strolling with his dog among the hoodoos, hitting the curling rink during the season, and staying active daily—even squeezing in push-ups during brief breaks while on call.

Dr. Ram finds inspiration in the words of Sir William Osler, whose quotes resonate with his approach to medicine:

“Medicine is a science of uncertainty and an art of probability.”

“We are here to add what we can to life, not to get what we can from life.”

“The good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease.” more on UCLIC Program rural healthcare challenges more engaging title

My Father Died Twice, and I Couldn’t Save Him Either Time: Part 2

My father died because of me. Let’s recap: My parents were born into poverty, and not the luxurious type of poverty whereby you are poor but have an abundance of social services, food banks, and free medical care to help with the forgotten basic needs of food, shelter and water. My parents were both born into

SAMSON RAM, FIRST FURRY BEST FRIEND of Dr Rithesh Ram

Some coincidences in my life are bittersweet. For those that know me, you already know why I have no particular affinity to December and the holiday season. My Father died for the second time in December 2006 (Part 2 coming soon for those that have asked and been waiting). But he died on the birthday

There is no “God” in Medicine

A couple posts ago, Veronique wrote about Dr. Gregory House, a notorious television physician with a “God complex” and an ego nearly as big as Trump’s. In fact, most entertainment portrayals of physicians tend to showcase the “God complex” doctor – the one we hate because of his ridiculous bedside manner – but also the
